scout mountain ultras

Runners of the 50-mile and 100-mile races are required to:

  • show the course map on their phone or watch at bib-pickup and

  • have it with them at all times during their race.

Courses Overview 

This is a challenging and beautiful event in the Bannock and Pocatello mountain ranges surrounding Pocatello, Idaho.

Distances and elevation gain/loss based on Caltopo maps (real-world experience generally records a bit more in all measures):

1) 100-miler: 102.2 miles, 22,276′ of gain, 22.284′ of loss
2) 50-miler: 54.9 miles, 11,328′ of gain, 11,375′ of loss
3) 50-km: 35.5 miles (57.7 km), 7,540′ of gain, 7,587′ of loss
4) 23-miler: 23.1 miles, 5,685′ of gain, 5,685′ of loss

All four distances summit our namesake, Scout Mountain!

Historical Information

  • 2026 - The SMU 50-miler start time moved to midnight (i.e., just as Friday becomes Saturday); all race start times shifted earlier to accomodate the new 10pm finish time of all distances.

  • 2025 - Chip timing now at all aid stations (except Cusick Creek); SMU 100-miler became a Hard Rock 100 qualifier

  • 2023 - 50 km race added (it’s actually 57.7 km, 35.5 miles)

  • 2020 - Scout Mountain Ultras was cancelled due to COVID-19

  • 2018 - Scout Mountain Ultras 100 mile, 50 mile and 21 miles started

  • 2014 - New 100k, 60k and 35k routes

  • 2013 - Pocatello 50 (miles) followed the original course

  • 2012 - Pocatello 50 (miles) followed the original course

  • 2011 - Pocatello 50 (miles) followed an alternative snow course

  • 2010 - Pocatello 50 (miles) was cancelled due to inclement weather

  • 2009 - Pocatello 50 (miles) followed the original course
